Central African Republic: Mayor of Bangui Named Interim President

Graffi calls for the former president to step down amid the ongoing crisis.

Cape Town — Mayor of Bangui Catherine Samba-Panza has been elected the Central African Republic’s interim president by the transitional parliament, according to an Al Jazeera Television report.

Deutsche Wellereports that contenders included two sons of former presidents, Sylvain Patasse and Desire Kolingba.

Samba-Panza will fill the place of Michel Djotodia, who stepped aside last month under intense international pressure. Djotodia, who was installed by the mainly Muslim rebel force Seleka, was blamed for a failure to stem rising sectarian bloodshed, which the United Nations has warned could turn into genocide.
